Interpretation Translation Volunteer
Purpose and Impact: Catholic Charities of Tennessee Refugee and Immigration Services provide a wide array of programs to help newly-arrived refugees acquire skills they need to acclimate to American culture and responsibilities. In order to ensure these programs are meaningful-such as our Employment and Cultural orientations-our clients must be able to understand the information being imparted. For our many clients who have to adjust to an entirely new environment and still do not have a working grasp of the English language, these programs are all the more vital to resettlement, as well as their ability to feel safe and at ease in their new home. With your foreign language background, you can help increase the efficiency of these core programs and help fill the translation-need gaps that our Case Workers cannot do alone.
Tasks and Responsibilities: Examples of translation needs include, but are not limited, to:
•For monthly Employment Orientation and monthly Cultural Orientation
•For monthly Job Readiness workshops
•Assisting with translation regarding resettlement activities on an as-needed basis
Current Foreign language needs:
•Burmese, Karin, Zombe (all the Burmese dialects)
Required Skills: Proficiency in both English and one or more of the foreign languages listed above; a willingness to perform translation duties patiently and effectively.
Preferred Skills: Complete fluency is preferred, though a working ability to communicate accurately is acceptable.
Time Commitment: Volunteers will join an email listserv and call list, to assist with translation on an as-needed basis. This is a flexible positon, though we do ask that you remain active with your service. You may also translate during particular time slots, for particular programs, and/or for regularly-scheduled orientations.
Site and Supervision: This volunteer will be supervised by various coordinators, depending on the program for which you translate. The orientations will take place at Catholic Charities' main office, at 2806 McGavock Pike, Nashville, TN 37214. Other translation needs can be done telephonically.
Volunteer Benefits: This position provides valuable experience for those wishing to formalize their language abilities; individuals seeking experience with non-profit work, and/or working with refugee and immigration services; and anyone with an interest in other cultures and helping others to thrive in the Nashville community. Translators are highly-valued members of the Catholic Charites RIS team and contribute to making a significant difference in the quantity and quality of services we are able to provide.
