World Refugee Day Celebrations around the state

Author:

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people are forced to leave their home countries because of a well-founded fear of persecution, having been targeted for their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Many of these refugees arrive in Tennessee each year.

In December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 20th, 2001 World Refugee Day in honor of the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. In the years following, refugees and service organizations have used the day to commemorate the plight and contributions of refugees. During the month of June, the Tennessee Office for Refugees and its partners will be gathering at events around the state that aim to raise awareness and educate the community about the rich culture and experiences that these individuals bring to Tennessee. Please check out the events below to find out what's happening in your community.
