While the party had all the classic staples like food, dancing and live music, one young man shows, the best way to celebrate is to make the most of a priceless second chance.

"We have a lot of wars in Darfur," said Bakary Mohamed, a refugee from the Darfur region of Sudan.

Youth Programs

Started in 2004 with a group of 15 teenagers, the Refugee Youth Program now serves over 200 youth and 100 parents annually. Because refugees spend years in refugee camps, often leading to serious gaps in education, the Refugee Youth Program focuses on integration into the United States’ school system while recognizing the importance of staying connected to cultures of origin.

Elders Program

Nashville is home to many senior citizens who are refugees from around the world. These delightful seniors have overcome a myriad of obstacles but are still at risk due to changing roles, language difficulties and loss of their native community. In many cases refugee elders depend on their children to provide help, yet their children adapt to new roles more quickly resulting in their elderly parents feeling isolated both at home and in their community.

Employment Services

As soon as refugees arrive in the United States their goal is self-sufficiency through employment. In addition to serving refugees resettled by our Reception and Placement Program we are also able to assist 2nd migrants, asylees, entrants and victims of human trafficking with appropriate documentation. Catholic Charities Refugee Services provides employment assistance through three programs: Match Grant, Social Services and Targeted Assistance.
