Amerasians

An Amerasian is a child fathered by a United States citizen in Vietnam during conflict in that region, and resettled in the US under legislation enacted in December of 1987 commonly referred to as the “Amerasian Homecoming Act”. Amerasians are granted Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) status under special provisions of the Immigrant and Nationality Act and are eligible for the same benefits as refugees.

Quick Facts:
  • Over 75,000 Amerasians have been resettled in the United States.
  • Though most Amerasians arrived during the late 1980s and the 1990s, 84 were resettled in the U.S. in 2008.

Facts compiled from the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), Department of State/Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), and the Government Accountability Office (GAO). Please visit the Resources section for more information.
