Catholic Charities of Tennessee has received a $7,500 grant from Peyton Manning's PeyBack Foundation for the South Nashville Family Resource Center's "Recipes for Success" tutoring program. The funds will be used to purchase iPad Minis for the program and school supplies and backpacks for program participants.

"Technology grants are often hard to secure," said Megan Stack, director of Catholic Charities' Family Assistance and Community Employment Department. "We are so pleased that the PeyBack Foundation saw the merit that we see in our proposal."

"Having the iPad Minis and the related supplies is a tremendous step-up for ‘Recipes for Success,'" added Leslie Hayes, the Center's program coordinator.

The client focus of "Recipes for Success," Hayes explained, is low-income youth, 9-14 years old, living in Davidson County's 37211 zip code and their families. The program is a unique hybrid of mentoring, tutoring and healthy living for the entire family.

Each Saturday session has two components: several qualified graduate students lead a tutoring session focusing on math skills and reading and writing skills. Teachers are also available for one-on-one tutoring, as well as specific homework help.

During the tutoring session, the remainder of the family is invited to the "Recipes for Success" teaching kitchen. In these sessions, the family participates in preparing a meal, while learning ways to cut sodium or fat from a meal or learn other healthier choices available.

The PeyBack Foundation was established by Peyton Manning, former University of Tennessee football great and now Denver Broncos quarterback, in 1999. The foundation's focus is to promote the future success of disadvantaged youth by assisting programs that provide leadership and growth opportunities for children at risk.

In June, the PeyBack Foundation announced that it has distributed $1 million to 144 youth based organizations in Colorado, Tennessee, Louisiana and Indiana. "Recipes for Success" is one of 31 Tennessee programs - and one of only eight in the metropolitan Nashville area - to receive funding this year. Grants valued at more than $6.6 million have been awarded to various community organizations over the foundation's life.
